Nick Drnaso’s comics mercilessly reveal the sterile sameness of the suburbs.

Connected by a series of gossipy teens, the modern lost souls of Beverly struggle with sexual anxieties that are just barely repressed and social insecurities that undermine every word they speak.

A group of teenagers pick up trash on the side of the highway–flirting, preening, and ignoring a potentially violent loner in their midst. A college student brings her sort-of boyfriend to a disastrous house party with her high-school acquaintances. A young woman experiences a traumatic incident at the pizza shop where she works and the fallout reveals the racial tensions simmering below the surface. Again and again, the civilized façade of Drnaso’s pitch-perfect surburban sprawl and pasty Midwestern protagonists cracks in the face of violence and quiet brutality.

Drnaso’s bleak social satire in Beverly reveals a brilliant command of the social milieu of twenty-first-century existence, echoing the black comic work of Todd Solondz, Sam Lipsyte, and Daniel Clowes. Precisely and hauntingly recounted, each chapter of Beverly reveals something new–and yet familiar–about the world in which we live.

A Stunner of a Debut Novel–This Young Man is Amazing!
Wow. i mean…wow. This is a breathtaking, emotional rollercoaster ride through and around the lives of a suburban family, depicting the humor and the heartbreak of a mundane life. There are plot twists that are as shocking and as unexpected as anything you’d find in the best of M. Night Shyamalan’s earliest work, and a very ominous shadow of darkness in an otherwise blasé American landscape that Stephen King hasn’t been able to recreate in three decades. Yes, I’m aware that those aren’t graphic artists like Dmaso, but that’s the point: he has the eyes of a cinematographer and the instincts of a literary master.About his style, I should say this: I didn’t cotton to it for the first story, but after that, wow. It’s very clean, clinical, and crisp; if it is to be a biting commentary on suburban life, as some have suggested, then the antiseptic nature of this style only makes it more potent and powerful. I know that I started on this not really knowing what lay ahead, and an hour or so later, I was putting it back down, astounded by the world I had just encountered. This is as perfect a debut as one could expect, and I’m looking forward to saying that his next work overshadows and outshines the greatness that is found in Beverly’s colorful pages…..

Could not put this one down
Absolutely fantastic debut from Nick Drnaso. Everything about Beverly – from the simplistic illustration, the wonderfully nihilistic intertwined plots, to even the page feel and weight of the paper – is delightful. I finished it in one sitting, but the carefully connected storylines definitely leaves the opportunity for another read.

I’ll read more by Nick Dmaso
Complex, inward-looking stories for grown-ups. Bring your mind, this isn’t a comic book.

    Deep, thoughtful, funny
Exceptionally enjoyable graphic novel, best I’ve read in years actually. The stories are highly creative and although somewhat focused on teen and young adult characters, get into some interesting issues like urban crime, class and xenophobia. The artwork is simple but effective. Highest recommendation.

This is an incredible graphic novel. It is extremely evocative and captivating. The story is hard to describe, but it is incredible to experience.

    Average indie comic
Some of the short stories were decent but as a whole I don’t think the comic holds up. It felt like a lot of indie comic books where the author is trying to say profound but really there isn’t anything that deep. After I read the book I looked up interpretations online to see if there was anything I missed but I didn’t find anything. Also the art style is very minimalist. It has a Chris Ware vibe to it. It works for the whole morbid/slice of life/ existential feel but it also made it difficult to tell characters apart at times.

    Outstanding modern American literature
Just a really outstanding read on American culture right now – this book does an uncanny job of showing the subtext, undercurrents and dreariness of modern Americana.

    Compelling and Unusual
Nick Drnaso has a remarkable sense of space and perspective. Each line in every panel is drawn with surgical precision. The story wove an interesting pattern. Poignant at times; disturbing at others. Getting ready to read it for a third time.

I haven’t really experienced anything like this before. Highly recommended for anyone who appreciates art.

A collection of short stories with some interesting themes running through them. I feel the author wants us to form our own opinions on each situation. I enjoyed the art and dialogue, a lot of care went into this book. Top effort.
